Chicago Teachers strike for the first time in 25 years.

No school for Chicago Public School kids today. The teachers union decided to strike for the first time in 25 years. Growing up in Chicago schools this has been an issue for as long as I can remember. What’s wrong with our society that every year teachers need to fight for the tools they need to teach our kids? Oddly enough this is not an issue in suburban public schools. Whether these teachers are fighting for more money, smaller classes, air conditioned rooms, more security or simply their respect; give it to them.  Making the issue of education about politics is plain wrong. The children of Chicago should not have to wonder year after year if they will be in school on the first day.  It is after all teachers that aid in producing our doctors, lawyers, scientist, and athletes. That is not to say that CPS should give in to every demand of the teachers union because clearly some changes need to be made within the entire school system. If all they’re asking for are better working conditions which include: better pay, smaller classes, more social workers and a safe place for kids to learn those things should be afforded to them.
I hope that the bad blood between Mayor Rahm Emmanuel and Union President Karen Lewis was not a contributing factor in the inability to reach a total compromise. From the start there was a confrontational stance between the two, leaving our kids in middle. Officially, the teachers will strike as of today, which now leaves the ball in the Mayor’s court. As it stands no one knows how long the strike will last. According to the mayor there are still two issues remaining directly related to teacher evaluations.  Let’s hope an agreement is reached soon so that these kids can get their heads in those books.

Walter Fortson : A Comeback Story For Troubled Youth.

Walter is a honor student at Rutgers University, who just received a $30,000 Truman Scholarship, the only undergrad from New Jersey to obtain it. The award covers grad school costs for those pursuing careers in government or public affairs. At the age of twenty-seven, he was living in a halfway house and taking university classes through a program that allows convicted felons attend college. Walter was arrested in Atlantic City, after being charged with selling drugs and taking a plea deal for five years. To often it is believed that stories like this are rare and that young black boys are doomed for failure once they've made mistakes. Contrary to popular belief there are many black boys and men who make great efforts to overcome their circumstances, we just don't hear about them often. Furthermore the American justice system does not promote change and rehabilitation for convicted felons, they continue to be punished after serving time. We should applaud programs that seek to help and mold convicted felons and other troubled youth. Without these programs vicious cycles will continue in our communities, and that helps no one.

Obama slow jams

If you happened to miss the President slow jammin' on Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday night then you're probably not sure what folks are mad at today. Obama appeared on the show to discuss of course the upcoming election, student loans and the infamous secret service scandal. His appearance sparked controversy when he participated in the segment "slow jam the news". Many think that his participation  showed a lack of leadership and are jumping at the opportunity to call him out on it. Fox News is of course having the biggest problem with it and already claiming a Republican victory. Let's face it, this president has a charm and appeal that not many do; the appearance on Tuesday received huge ratings due to his appearance. So get a grip....the man knows his job and a little bit of humor never hurt anybody. Watch the video and you be the judge...

Power To The People

The The ex-Black Panther and current U.S. Congressman Bobby Rush stands on Capitol Hill in solidarity with Trayvon Martin.

Pay Attention College Students...

Congress at it again yall! They have decided to tighten the eligibility rules for Pell Grant applications, these rule changes are set to start on July 1, 2012. Pell Grants were and are designed to help those from families of modest means afford college, due to its successfulness, the number of those who apply has more than doubled in the last ten years. The number has risen from 9.5 million in 01' to 19.4 million in 2011, while the costs of the program has tripled from ten million in 01' to 34.9 million in 2012.
One of the Pell Grant provisions being discarded is the Ability-To-Benefit (ATB) test. Reading Comprehension, Sentence Structure, and Arithmetic Skills are the three ATB tests measures. This test is a requirement for those who wanna apply for a Pell Grant, but don't have a h.s. diploma or a G.E.D. certification. The removal of the ATB option will most definitely affect minorities and low income citizens. This test is for many, the gateway to higher education. The numbers say it all...according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (2008), those with bachelor's degree earn twice as much as those with a h.s. diploma, $42,783 to $21, 569, also 24 % of African-Americans students receive Pell Grants. To all those who want to take the ATB test, the deadline is July 1, 2012.

Trayvon Martin Shooter 'Couldn't Stop Crying' After Shooting - ABC News

Trayvon Martin Shooter 'Couldn't Stop Crying' After Shooting - ABC News

Unbelievable

As I sit here writing this post I'm getting angry and you should be too. Watching Good Morning America today my blood was boiling watching the"friend" of George Zimmerman defend him. He stated that Mr. Zimmerman has in many ways lost his life as well, I'm sitting and screaming "are you fucking serious????? No, he hasn't lost his life, he can still get up everyday and see his family, smell the spring time air and see his kids grow up. Trayvon Martin lost his life; his parents will never see him graduate....they will never see him play another game of football or hold a grandchild of Trayvon's. So let's not start feeling sorry for Zimmerman. It is being reported that Zimmerman's nose was broken during the struggle with Trayvon.....go figure!!! When you hunt a person and walk up on them your nose might be broken, but that does not give you the right to take a life. All I can say is black people beware because this law in Florida basically allows anyone to shoot you and say they feared for their life. So black people please don't raise your voices in public or make any sudden moves because that may very well be taken as a threat. I'm being sarcastic of course but you just never know when a boy can be shot and killed for wearing a hoodie in the rain.

Romney Wins In Illinois...So Wat?

It seems Mitt pulls it out in Illinois, but do we really care? It has been a forgone conclusion since Super Tuesday, he was the unwanted frontrunner, who as far as numbers go, is gonna clinch the nomination. There were 54 delegates up for grabs today in Illinois. Romney had a total of 521 delegates coming in to the state, the closest to him being Santorum with 253 delegates. It is clearly looking like a definite road to victory for Mitt, needing a total of 1,144 to capture the Republican nomination. Just one thing...his fellow nominees got other plans...to continue trying to pick up delegates, regardless of how hopeless their chances look in the race. The goal to prevent Romney from having the total 1,144 before the party's convention in the coming summer, and cause a contested nomination! This could only work wonders for the Obama camp. A divided republican party, especially in a presidential election, is a godsend for democrats.

I'm not sure this is what tweeting is for...New York Knicks basketball player, J.R. Smith, recently posts a pic of his girlfriend, Tahiry Jose. I think the NBA took issue with the photo though, considering the fine of $25,000, it handed out...

Question Of The Day?

Had to stop in and say a lil something...was having a convo with a good friend, and we debated whether black folk should register as independents rather than democrat or republican? I stated we as a people, should register as independents until the dems and republicans show us the same respect shown to other demographics when campaigning or when elected to office. As my friend stated correctly, in the upcoming election its really a non-issue since of course the majority of black people seems to be clearly voting Obama in Nov. I agreed but replied, " The presidential election aint the only election we need to be focusing on...there is local, state and federal." To be clear, I'm not saying the democratic party aint a friend to us...nor saying the repubs are...just stating the facts...Why must the only option in politics be democrats or if we well-off enough republican? It seems to me both parties go out of their way to court or draw in independents, yet we cling to a party that discards our issues or fail to fight for the things we want or our community needs...I'm just asking...

We Wish You Peace Love And Soul !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 1936-2012

Chicago and the world has lost a great entertainment pioneer, Don Cornelius....I just can't imagine someone who wasn't glued to the T.V. in the 70's,80's and 90's on a Saturday morning...I know I most definitely did...along with everyone else in my family. Coming straight out of Du Sable high school, the Bronzeville native moved on to the Marine Corps and serving in the Korea War. Don was working as a journalist and a Chicago DJ in 1970. He started the "Soul Train", first as a radio segment and starting in 1971 moved it to L.A. to become the longest first- run syndicated show in history. For 35 years, Soul Train and Don Cornelius as its conductor influenced music, dance and t.v.  It became the major vessel for black music during its reign. The "Train" brought the music and the artist directly to our living room. Teaching the world to dance from 1971 to 1993, and spotlighting  the best in soul music, the Soul Train creator captivated our eyes and ears with his smooth baritone voice...He will be greatly missed!!!!! People, I leave you with the signature catchphrase of a giant...We Wish You Peace Love And Soul!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RealClearPolitics - Video - Again: Obama Uses Car, Ditch & Slurpee Metaphor At Sestak Fundraiser

RealClearPolitics - Video - Again: Obama Uses Car, Ditch & Slurpee Metaphor At Sestak Fundraiser

I'm Just Sayin'...

Wassup people? I had to log in and say a few words on the state of the union address by President Obama the other day. Initially watching it, I was kinda of confused. I knew I had heard some things I felt were true or right, and or I agreed with, but something just wasn't right...So two newports later, I called a friend who just blurted out " The President wasn't trying to give the republicans any soundbites. " I couldn't say anything but nod in agreement. I decided to watch the speech again, yea I'm a political junkie, I DVR'd it...lol... anyway
A hour and some change later, I'm of the opinion Obama delivered on two accounts. The first being, the state of the union address being an political entity in american politics and must be one not solely partisan. It must be for the benefit of the entire nation. Secondly, he outlined how we encountered the problems of our economy and political stalemate, and gave ways to pull us out of the quagmire. Many may have hoped for a more red meat type of speech, me too, for that matter. I suppose in a heated presidential election, I guess one may have to give Obama a pass for being careful....I'm posting a clip of the speech to let the people decide....
